ALLEN PARK -- A lot of NFL fans are wondering what has happened to Green Bay's defense this season.

ALLEN PARK — A lot of NFL fans are wondering what has happened to Green Bay’s defense this season.

In 2010, the Packers were ranked second in the league in scoring offense, allowing an average of 15 points per game. This year, they’re giving up 21.2. Last year, they allowed the fifth-fewest total yards in the league with 309.1 per game. That figure has ballooned by more than 80 yards per game this season.

Clearly, Detroit’s opponent in Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game won’t be able to contain the Lions’ high-powered offense, which just put up seven touchdowns in a 49-35 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, right?

Well, it’s a little more complicated than that, but Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford breaks it down simply.

“They’re up by three touchdowns sometimes and teams are having to throw it,” he explained. “They’re doing a great job of getting a lead early, and teams are having to throw the ball a bunch of times.

“If you’re going to throw the ball as many times as you have to to try to get back in the game against their offense, you’re going to (give up) some yards. But they also lead the NFL in interceptions. So it’s give and take. They’re aggressive – that works for them equally, I guess.”

While statistics for Green Bay’s run defense are relatively close between this season and last season, there’s a huge discrepancy in the pass defense.

Teams threw the ball 32.9 times per game for an average of 194.5 yards in 2010. Offenses are flying high with 39.1 passes per game for an average of 289.3 yards in 2011.

But as Stafford pointed out, the Packers are scoring far more this season than last – 11.3 points more every game, to be precise. Their average margin of victory has exploded from 9.2 points last year to 14.3 points this year.

That’s probably striking enough to bear repeating: 10 games into the season, the Packers are beating their opponents by more than two touchdowns per game. It may not be at the level of the 19.7 points per game by which the New England Patriots beat their opponents during their undefeated regular season of 2007, but it’s nothing to shake a stick at.

Cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Tramon Williams, as well as safeties Charlie Peprah and Morgan Burnett have combined for 16 of the Packers’ league-leading 19 interceptions – which will which will dust last year’s total of 24, by the way, should the defense maintain the pace.

Of the quartet’s 16 interceptions, three were pick-sixes.

So you’ll have to forgive Stafford if he’s not exactly looking past a third of the Packers that is overshadowed by their offense.

“They’re just very aggressive,” Stafford said of the defense. “In the secondary, they have a lot of confidence in themselves, as they should. It’s one of the best, if not the best, secondaries in the NFL. Those guys are looking to make picks and turn the ball over – get the ball over to their offense. They’re just extremely talented guys, and aggressive, as well.”

There is the quick update of the day.

The Green Bay Packers improved to 10-0 with a 35-26 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 11 of the 2011-12 NFL season. The Packers won despite possibly playing their worst game of the season

The Green Bay Packers improved to 10-0 with a 35-26 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 11 of the 2011-12 NFL season. The Packers won despite possibly playing their worst game of the season. The Buccaneers couldn’t take advantage of it as their playoff hopes have basically gone to zilch. The Packers still have a three-game advantage over the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears in the NFC North.

Here were some studs and duds from that contest.

Mega Stud: Jordy Nelson(notes)

Jordy Nelson had six receptions for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He had the 40-yard touchdown reception that essentially sealed the victory in the fourth quarter. Both of his receptions came in significant periods of the contest.

Stud: Aaron Rodgers(notes)

Aaron Rodgers didn’t have his best game. However, an average game for Rodgers is 23-of-34 for 299 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. The Packers had a few drops and he had a few errant passes to begin the second half.

Stud Or Dud: Tramon Williams(notes)

Tramon Williams got beat too many times in coverage. However, he had two interceptions. I just don’t feel like he’s playing consistent enough as the shutdown cornerback. He’s taking too many risks.

Mega Dud: Offensive Line

The offensive line is regressing. I can understand the growing pains for Marshall Newhouse(notes). However, Scott Wells(notes) and Josh Sitton(notes) were getting dominated by Albert Haynesworth(notes). It seems like Sitton is also making more penalties this season. Rodgers has found himself scrambling and the running game hasn’t thrived. Much of that is because of the offensive line.

Could you imagine the statistics on Rodgers if he had an offensive line that was similar to the 2007-08 New England Patriots? Unfortunately, he doesn’t. This concerns me as they have four games against the New York Giants, Bears and Lions to closeout the regular season.

Dud: Special Teams

Even when Green Bay’s special teams units did something right, they did it wrong. The Randall Cobb(notes) punt return that was penalized because of a block in the back was a primary example of that. Of course, that seemed very petty.

Dud: Defense

The tackling was below average to horrible. The defensive backs are jumping routes and getting burned. Tramon Williams and Sam Shields(notes) cannot win one-on-one matchups with anybody. The Packers have nobody who can cover a tight end. The pass rush is always a fraction-of-a-second too late. The run defense has been inconsistent. The defense surrendered 455 yards against one of the NFL’s blandest offenses. Many of their stops were a result of Josh Freeman(notes) throwing 10 yards short of the first-down marker on third down and fourth down.

I’m concerned about the defense. I don’t think this team will repeat as Super Bowl champions unless the defense improves during the playoffs. The weather could really work against this team in January.

Summary:

They say that the best teams can win when they’re not playing their best. The Buccaneers are probably one of the NFL’s best teams at winning ugly games since Raheem Morris has been the head coach. Yet, the Packers essentially beat the Buccaneers at their own game.

The Packers probably wouldn’t have won this game had it not been for the Buccaneers’ own errors. Raheem’s decision to attempt those onside kicks and the dropped two-point conversion from Kellen Winslow(notes) Jr. were costly errors. The Packers capitalized on them.

Grades:

Offense: B-

Defense: C-

Special Teams: D

Joshua Huffman grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as a Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs enthusiast. His favorite Packer moments include Super Bowl XXXI, XLV, and Al Harris(notes) interception return following Matt Hasselbeck’s(notes) “We’re gonna score” comments. As a Packers and Cubs fan, he suffered through Steve Bartman and “4th & 26″ in a span of three months.

The Atlanta Falcons will be without center Todd McClure again for their critical game against the Green Bay Packers. The longtime anchor had battled back from an early injury to play against the Buccaneers and Seahawks, but a knee injury will keep him out for another week. Rookie defense end Cliff Matthews is also out, which could be a bigger deal if John Abraham isn’t able to go.

The good news is Roddy White was a full practice participant, meaning he’s almost certain to go on Sunday.

The Pack will be without starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga, a setback considering defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux will return for Atlanta. The two wouldn’t have been paired against each other anyway, but any adjustments for Green Bay could cause challenges. Then again, the Packers won the Super Bowl last year with about six healthy players, so.

A radio host asked me this week: Is there any reason to think the Green Bay Packers aren’t the best team in football?

I was silent for a second, which felt like a minute. Every reason I could come up with felt like nitpicking.

The Packers are rolling right now with an offense that looks unstoppable, and a defense that is making enough big plays. A forgiving schedule gives the Packers a great chance to roll up a big win total this year.

You have to squint hard to find areas of concern, but we saw a few of them in the Green Bay papers this morning:

1. The Packers are trying to teach James Starks to have better vision, according to the Kareem Copeland of the Green Bay Press Gazette. Too often, Starks dances or misses the hole.

Ryan Grant seems to have great one-cut instincts but can no longer get to the outside well. The Packers running game has been pretty good, but not great. They could struggle against a truly elite defense.

2. Cornerback Tramon Williams hasn’t been the same since a Week One shoulder injury, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The Packers are 31st against the pass in terms of yardage, although they are first in interceptions.

We’d argue that Sam Shields and Charles Woodson haven’t been any better in coverage. This is probably Green Bay’s biggest concern, but the personnel is there.

3. Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com looked at why Clay Matthews is stuck on one sack. Matthews does lead the team in QB hits. We covered this topic last week, but Wilde does a nice job going inside the numbers. The Packers rush three defenders more than any team.

So there you go: The Packers aren’t perfect. They are closer to complete through one quarter of the season than any team out there.

What do you guys think about this.

Bulaga suffered a sprain and bruise of his left knee in the first quarter of the Packers’ 27-17 win at Chicago last weekend. Grant rushed for a season-high 92 yards against the Bears but bruised his kidney on a hit to his back.

“There’s a protocol you have to go through, and the staff does not feel that he’s ready to go,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “I’m sure Ryan would like to go, but he has not been released from the medical staff. The same thing with Bryan Bulaga.”

Grant had been splitting carries in the first three games with James Starks, who will make the start Sunday. Marshall Newhouse, a second-year player, will make his first pro start as the replacement for Bulaga.

After he missed nearly the entire Super Bowl-winning season for the Packers in 2010 because of an ankle injury in the opener, Grant didn’t take the news well Friday that he would miss another game.

“If it was my call, I’d play,” Grant said.

The fifth-year player said he has felt fine most of the week and hasn’t seen any blood in his urine, which he did after Sunday’s game before he was taken to a Chicago hospital.

“The soreness that I have, I don’t think it has anything to do with my kidney,” Grant said Friday. “It’s nothing that I wouldn’t think that I couldn’t play with. But at the end of the day, I’ve got to trust the doctors, and they’re telling me that it’s something that I should be cautious about, and if I’ve got to sit out, I’ve got to sit out.”

Grant expects to get the OK to play in the Oct. 9 game at Atlanta.

Bulaga is ahead of schedule in his recovery, McCarthy said. Newhouse played well last week and the coaching staff was optimistic the young player is ready for his starting debut.

“It’s a big opportunity,” McCarthy said. “He did a good job down there in Chicago. He needs to take that next step, clear this next hurdle.”

Newhouse will be the fifth Green Bay player to line up at right tackle beside Josh Sitton since the talented right guard broke into the starting lineup toward the end of his rookie season in 2008.

Sitton has no reservations about Newhouse’s ability to handle the first-time assignment.

“Marshall is a smart kid, knows what he’s doing out there,” Sitton said. “It’s kind of a seamless transition. He’s smart, so it’s not like I’ve got to freakin’ baby him.”

Notes: LB Clay Matthews said Friday he’s not concerned he has only one sack after three games. The All-Pro had six sacks at the same point last season and finished with a career-high 17, including the playoffs. “Sacks are a very misleading statistic,” Matthews said. “I’m doing my job, which is to put pressure on the quarterback. There’s no doubt about that.” Matthews, who has a nagging quadriceps injury, didn’t practice Friday but is probable for Sunday. … CBs Charles Woodson (foot/knee) and Tramon Williams (shoulder), TE Jermichael Finley (ankle), LT Chad Clifton (knee) and DE Ryan Pickett (foot) are also listed as probable for Sunday’s game.

The Green Bay Packers will be without the services of running back Ryan Grant on Sunday when they face the Denver Broncos. Grant did not practice at all this week and was ruled out. In his place, James Starks and John Kuhn will take his place. The former, though, will start and receive the majority of starts.

Grant suffered a bruised kidney in Sunday’s game while 11 minutes remained on the clock.

Safety Nick Collins has not been placed on injured reserve this season, but his recent neck surgery to repair a herniated disc could be career-threatening. Cornerbacks Tramon Williams and Charles Woodson are probable and could keep Kyle Orton underperforming.

Tight end Jermichael Finley was limited in practice all week, but he is probable and ready to go on Sunday. He could cause plenty of problems for the Broncos, specially if Champ Bailey is unable to play.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)—The Green Bay Packers say running back Ryan Grant(notes) and

The team ruled them out on Friday.

Bulaga suffered a sprain and bruise of his left knee in the first quarter of
the Packers’ 27-17 win at Chicago last weekend. Grant rushed for a season-high

There’s no sugarcoating the loss of safety Nick Collins for the
Green Bay Packers’ season.

It’s akin to tight end Jermichael Finley’s season-ending knee

With Finley last year, the Packers at least had another
game-changer in the passing game in Greg Jennings, plus a deep
enough corps of receivers behind him to make up some of the
difference.

Collins is a different story. He’s one of the best safeties in
the game, a three-time Pro Bowler who at age 28 still was playing
at that level. The Packers don’t have a Jennings-type player
alongside him and aren’t as good at backup safety as they were at
receiver last year.

This isn’t saying their Super Bowl hopes are dead. The one
player they can’t win the title without is quarterback Aaron
Rodgers. Outside linebacker Clay Matthews probably falls in that
category, too.

But it does mean there’s reason to wonder whether they’ll be
enough like the No. 2 scoring defense they had last year to win it
all again.

In considering the likelihood, it’s worth noting an observation
defensive coordinator Dom Capers made to reporters just before the
start of his 26th NFL training camp. He said that building a strong
NFL defense requires two or three difference-makers and a bunch of
starters who know and play their roles well. Coincidentally, he at
the time was praising backup safety Charlie Peprah, who’d been an
assignment-sure role player in helping the Packers win the Super
Bowl last season after Morgan Burnett blew out his knee in Week 4.
Peprah most likely will replace Collins.

With Capers’ observation in mind, it’s easy to rank the Packers’
most important defensive personnel. Matthews heads the list,
followed in order by Charles Woodson, then probably B.J. Raji, with
Collins and cornerback Tramon Williams neck and neck for the No. 4
spot.

By that measure, Capers still has his top three playmakers.

So assuming Peprah replaces Collins, Capers has a smart and
experienced quarterback for the secondary. But Peprah lacks
Collins’ abilities to run and play the ball, and he’ll be alongside
Burnett, a second-year pro who has played in only six NFL games,
instead of Collins, who could change games with interceptions (17
in the previous three seasons combined) and provide a blitz
security blanket for Capers as the last line of defense.

But keep in mind also that the Packers’ pass defense in the
first two games hasn’t been anything like what it was while winning
the Super Bowl last year. In 2010, the Packers ranked No. 1 in the
NFL in defensive passer rating (67.2 points); this year, they’re
No. 13 (92.9 points). They’ve also given up the most passing yards
(800) in the league after two games.

It’s also true this two-game performance has to be put in
context. In the opener, the Packers faced New Orleans, which has a
premier quarterback in Drew Brees and as talented an offense at the
skill positions as any in the NFL. Then last week they played the
NFL’s early-season phenom, Carolina rookie quarterback Cam Newton.
The Saints are going to put up big numbers almost every week, and
Newton topped the 400-yard mark passing in his first two games.
These were no chumps.

Still, this has to raise some red flags for the Packers. To win
a title, they’ll have to hold up against the league’s best
quarterbacks, and you can bet Capers and coach Mike McCarthy are
concerned. Brees, Atlanta’s Matt Ryan, Detroit’s ascending Matthew
Stafford and Philadelphia’s dangerous Michael Vick are among the
quarterbacks of NFC contenders, and Tom Brady and Philip Rivers
loom among the passers in the AFC.

The issue is whether Capers can absorb the Collins loss without
significantly scaling back his play calling. In that sense, losing
Williams would be worse. Woodson’s role as a playmaker in Capers’
nickel defense is contingent on Williams, and to a slightly lesser
extent Sam Shields, holding up well in one-on-one coverage against
the outside receivers. Without Williams, as we saw last week when
he didn’t play against Carolina because of a bruised shoulder,
Capers doesn’t have the coverage talent to play Woodson in that
higher-risk role.

Losing Collins isn’t the same in that way, but Capers almost
surely will scale back his playbook now that he doesn’t have
Collins’ ball skills and range as his last line of defense. The
degree to which he scales back then depends on Burnett.

The second-year pro has excellent size (6-1 3/8, 209 pounds) for
a safety and good ball skills. His speed (4.51 seconds in the 40 at
his Pro Day workout) is good but not of Collins’ caliber (4.37
seconds coming out of college), and Burnett lacks Collins’
knowledge and experience.

Capers will need time to see to what degree he can trust his
safeties without Collins, who had played in all 39 games Capers has
coached with the Packers. Last year, Shields came out of nowhere to
upgrade the No. 3 cornerback job and allow Capers to open his
playbook for Woodson. If the Packers are to win big again, they’ll
need Burnett to do the same this year.

Pro Bowl cornerback Tramon Williams didn’t practice this week after sustaining a bruised shoulder in the Sept. 8 opener. He is questionable to play against the Panthers.

Coach Mike McCarthy indicated after practice Friday a decision on Williams won’t be made until before the game.

“We’ll give him the next 48 hours to still have a chance,” he said.

Williams led the Packers with a career-high nine interceptions last season, including three in the playoffs.

“If he’s out there on the field (Sunday), I expect him to play,” cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt said. “If he tells me he can go, we’re going to put him out there, and he better rock and roll.”

But the absence of Williams in practice the last three days had the team focused on getting other guys ready to contribute against record-setting rookie quarterback Cam Newton and the Panthers in their home opener.

In fact, McCarthy alluded to Williams as being an afterthought in Green Bay’s game plan.

“We feel good about our plan and really planned all along to play without Tramon,” McCarthy said. “You have to do that as a coaching staff. So our defense is ready.”

Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins talked Friday about the importance of having the next guy or guys ready to play.

Jarrett Bush and Pat Lee are next in line on the depth chart at cornerback after starters Williams and Charles Woodson and nickel back Sam Shields.

If Williams can’t play Sunday, that would probably mean a promotion for Shields to the starting lineup and plugging Bush or Lee into the nickel alignment (five defensive backs) that Green Bay defensive coordinator Dom Capers tends to use a lot.

“I’m confident with the group,” Whitt said.

Bush and Lee were pressed into service against Pittsburgh seven months ago. They had significant playing time in the Packers’ 31-25 victory after Woodson (broken collarbone) and Shields (shoulder) were injured in the first half. Bush remembers the game fondly, intercepting a pass by Ben Roethlisberger when the Packers’ veteran backup was playing as a sixth defensive back.

“I did what I was supposed to. I played how I was supposed to,” Bush said Friday. “I studied hard for it. I just had to keep going, keep going upward and take advantage of my opportunities and play to the standards that we’re held accountable to, that Dom holds us to.”

Bush is eager to be a major contributor again Sunday, when he will be back at Carolina for the first time since the Panthers cut him as an undrafted rookie before the 2006 season. The Packers claimed Bush off waivers the next day. He has been in Green Bay ever since as a core special teams player with periodic duties on defense.

Any hard feelings Bush may have had for the Panthers after they let him go vanished a long time ago.

“I’ve got my own self-gratification,” he said. “The Super Bowl definitely is one of those.

“Everything happens for a reason, I feel like. It’s just fortunate I did get cut,” Bush added. “It might have been the best thing that ever happened to me. It’s part of the business. There’s no personal vendetta. Let’s just go play football.”

NOTES: Packers rookie RB Alex Green was pulled from practice Friday after he aggravated an Achilles’ injury. “I was watching him go through the ball-security drill, and he was dragging his leg,” said McCarthy, who didn’t know the extent of the injury. Green is questionable for the game. . Among the Green Bay players who are probable to play are TE Jermichael Finley (ankle) and LT Chad Clifton (knee). Rookie LB Vic So’oto, who aggravated a back injury earlier in the week, won’t play for the second straight game. DE Mike Neal (knee) and LB Frank Zombo (shoulder) were previously listed as out.

Tom Silverstein Sporting News An analytical look at the Green Bay Packers heading into the 2011 NFL Draft: Team needs 1. Outside linebacker.

Tom Silverstein Sporting News

An analytical look at the Green Bay Packers heading into the 2011 NFL Draft:

Team needs

1. Outside linebacker. For the defense to reach its maximum potential, coordinator Dom Capers needs an outside linebacker to pair with Clay Matthews. Green Bay got solid performances from the combination of Erik Walden, Frank Zombo and Brad Jones last year, but another big-time rush linebacker would complete Capers’ defense. Walden and Zombo have potential, but if the right guy is there GM Ted Thompson would have to consider taking him.

2. Defensive end. Cullen Jenkins, the team’s best pass-rush lineman, is expected to move on in free agency. And there’s no chance suspended Johnny Jolly will be back, so it will be important to add numbers to the ranks. Rookies Mike Neal and C.J. Wilson will pick up some of the slack, but Neal is coming off a torn rotator cuff so Thompson must protect him. Last year, depth on the line paid off. Thompson will be looking for a large 3-4 end who can take on double-teams and free up whomever is the outside linebacker. Replacing Jenkins’ pass-rush skills inside on nickel downs will be difficult.

3. Left tackle. Thompson thought he drafted a future left tackle last year, but Bryan Bulaga wound up a better fit on the right side because he lacks prototypical arm length for a left tackle. Chad Clifton turns 35 in June, but Thompson has to find an anchor who will protect Aaron Rodgers for years to come.

4. Wide receiver. Donald Driver is 36, and James Jones is an unrestricted free agent. If the team parts ways with both, at least one receiver and maybe two will have to be drafted. Brett Swain could be a solid No. 3 or 4 wideout, but Thompson can’t count on that and must restock the position. The emergence of tight end Jermichael Finley, who functions like a receiver, makes this position less of a priority and one to target in the later rounds.

5. Guard. Daryn Colledge likely will find a new home in free agency, and backup Jason Spitz likely will go elsewhere and play center. That would leave a major void at guard. Thompson has drafted a couple offensive linemen every year since coach Mike McCarthy came on board, and he likely will do the same in 2011. Tackle is more important, but guard is a position Green Bay can’t ignore.

6. Cornerback. The secondary appears to be loaded, but Charles Woodson turns 35 in October and there isn’t much help behind Tramon Williams and Sam Shields. Pat Lee has not proved up to the task of playing regularly. Brandon Underwood has the potential to be a big bump-and-run corner but is too unreliable. A steadier player would be ideal.

7. Running back. Second-year back James Starks is the future and has the ability to be a 1,000-yard rusher, but he’ll need help. Green Bay probably is going to lose Brandon Jackson in free agency, and there’s no telling how Ryan Grant comes back from last year’s season-ending ankle injury.

Five-year history

With eight starters from his five drafts plus a host of others who have filled starting positions when injuries have occurred, Thompson has built this team into a powerhouse. And he has done it almost exclusively with draft picks and rookie free agents.

The 2009 draft yielded defensive fixtures Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji, and last year’s draft might turn out even better for overall talent. Picks such as tight end Jermichael Finley, guard Josh Sitton and inside linebacker Desmond Bishop are reasons why Thompson has not only built a team worthy of making it to the Super Bowl but also one that can go to several more.

2006: B+

2007: C+

2008: A-

2009: A

2010: A

Just one question

Q: Do you think Thompson relies too heavily on the draft to build the roster?

WR Donald Driver: “Ted’s always had the mind focus that he’s always going to build the team and build what’s best for this team. He’s done a great job at it. So many people are wondering why he didn’t go out and get this guy, that guy. Normally you think a GM would have to go out and grab players to make this team better. That (isn’t) his mindset. His mindset is he can build (within the system).”

Published: Sunday, February 06, 2011, 7:13 PM Â Â Â Updated: Sunday, February 06, 2011, 7:25 PM

ARLINGTON, Texas — Observations, opinions and some facts on the first quarter …

• Green Bay won the coin toss and deferred, and then forced a punt in three plays. The strategy almost backfired, however, when Tramon Williams fumbled Pittsburgh’s punt. They retained possession after the pileup was uncovered.

• Wonder what happens with those Super Bowl prop bets on the coin toss winner?

• First scoring opportunity was squandered by Green Bay. Receiver Jordy Nelson beat cornerback Bryant McFadden and Aaron Rodgers laid it in perfectly, but it went through Nelson’s arms at the Pittsburgh 15. Whoops.

• Steelers had to punt again when Ben Roethlisberger’s pass on third-and-1 for tight end Heath Miller was high. He had Miller mismatched against cornerback Williams.

• Packers throwing early and spreading Pittsburgh’s defense with multi-receiver formations. They keep pushing the ball upfield.

• Packers score first on 29-yard TD toss from Rodgers to Nelson on third-and-1. Rodgers laid in a perfect pass over cornerback William Gay. This time Nelson clenched the ball.

• More bad news for Steelers’ defense: cornerback McFadden is questionable with a hip injury.

• Illegal block in back penalty on Pittsburgh erases 36 yards in field position for the Steelers. They take over at their 7 after a 45-yard return by Antonio Brown is brought back.

• Roethlisberger goes deep for Mike Wallace and safety Nick Collins intercepts the underthrown ball. Collins returns it 36 yards for a TD, lunging into the end zone for the score. Wow. Defensive end Howard Green mauled guard Chris Kemoeatu to force Ben to throw earlier than he wanted. Two scores in 14 seconds.

Streaks, stats and notes – Franchises have a combined 21 NFL championships and 47 Pro Football Hall of Famers. … Bears have seven championships, with the 1985 team winning the Super Bowl. They won six NFL championships under George Halas. … Packers have a record 12 NFL championships, with the 1966, 1967 and 1996 teams winning the Super Bowl. They won five championships under Vince Lombardi. … This is fourth time both teams reached playoffs in same season. … NFL’s oldest rivalry takes dramatic turn when Bears and Packers meet for just second time in postseason. Only other playoff game was December 14, 1941, a week after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and Bears won 33-14 at Wrigley Field. A week later, they beat Washington for NFL championship. … Packers are trying to complete unlikely run from sixth seed to Super Bowl after winning at Philadelphia and knocking off top-seeded Falcons 48-21 in Atlanta behind a superb effort by Aaron Rodgers. He threw for 366 yards, completing 31 of 36 passes with three TD passes, while running for another score. … Pittsburgh’s 2005 champions are only team to win Super Bowl as No. 6 seed. … Packers and Bears split season series, with each team winning at home. Green Bay committed team-record 18 penalties in 20-17 loss at Soldier Field in September; beat Chicago 10-3 in regular-season finale at Lambeau Field to make playoffs. … Packers are in second NFC championship game in four seasons. They lost to Giants 23-20 in overtime three years ago … Green Bay is one of four teams in NFL with both offense and defense among league’s top 10. … Packers are second in points allowed at 15.0, with only Steelers allowing fewer. Pack is tied for second with Pittsburgh with 47 sacks, highest ranking in franchise history, and sixth in league with 32 takeaways. … Green Bay’s six losses were by combined 20 points, with none by more than four. Packers never trailed by more than seven in a game. … CB Tramon Williams became fourth player in club history with two interceptions in playoff game last week. He also clinched the win over Philadelphia in previous week with INT in end zone. … With 101.2 rating, Rodgers is first Packers QB with 100-plus passer rating in back-to-back seasons (103.2 in 2009). … Bears’ offense had 258 rushes and 276 pass plays (attempts plus sacks) over last nine games of regular season. … Chicago made playoffs for first time since 2006, when it lost to Indianapolis in Super Bowl. … Bears racked up 437 yards last week, most for them in playoffs during Super Bowl era. The 437 yards – 176 rushing – were second most for Chicago this season. … QB Jay Cutler became just second player in NFL postseason with two TDs passing and two TDs rushing last week, joining Cleveland Hall of Famer Otto Graham (1954 and 1955 NFL championship games).

GREEN BAY — The Green Bay Packers don't have a catchy nickname like "Monsters of the Midway" to describe their tough defense. Maybe they should

GREEN BAY — The Green Bay Packers don’t have a catchy nickname like “Monsters of the Midway” to describe their tough defense. Maybe they should.

Clay Matthews is back to pouncing on quarterbacks after a late-season sack drought. Charles Woodson does just about everything on defense, and does it well. And cornerback Tramon Williams has made a decisive play in each of the Packers’ first two playoff victories.

So while the Bears might have a more established defensive reputation coming into Sunday’s NFC championship game in Chicago, linebacker A.J. Hawk says the Packers’ defense doesn’t mind taking a back seat during the buildup this week. They’ll just have to show what they can do Sunday.

“They’ve had some guys there for a while that have really been producing, playing well,” Hawk said of the Bears. “So if they’re getting more national attention, whatever, that’s fine. That’s OK with us. They can have it. We’ll be fine with the guys we have here.”

While quarterback Aaron Rodgers wins over fans with the way he runs one of the league’s most dangerous offenses, the Packers wouldn’t be  preparing to play for a spot in the Super Bowl this week without an aggressive, consistent defense.

Despite losing several key players to injury through the season, Green Bay gave up 15 points per game in the regular season — second-best in the NFL behind only Pittsburgh.

And their play hasn’t dropped off in two road playoff games.

Philadelphia’s Michael Vick threw for 292 yards with a touchdown and an interception, but the Packers limited him to 33 yards rushing in a 21-16 victory. Against the Falcons on Saturday, the Packers held quarterback Matt Ryan to 186 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, and running back Michael Turner had only 39 yards rushing and a touchdown in a 48-21 victory.

Even Williams didn’t realize how well his teammates played against the Falcons until he watched game tape Monday.

“As a ‘DB’ you don’t get to see the front seven doing their job because you are in coverage all the time,” Williams said. “When you come back and watch film and see the way those guys are playing up front, it’s crazy. They’ve done a great job up there and kind of made our job easy.”

Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings sees the defense in action every day in practice.

“It’s tough,” Jennings said. “Those guys, they really fly around. Obviously with the kind of guys we have in the secondary, they’re able to make plays with the ball in the air.”

Jennings appreciates the way the Packers mix up their coverage in the secondary.

“We get the man. We get the zone. They can press,” Jennings said. “So we get to work on bump coverage quite often. And then when they’re in zone we get to work on off coverage. So they throw a lot of things at us that we’re going to see from opponents and some things we’re not going to see. They work well on  preparing us, and we try to do the same.”

Woodson and Matthews are the Packers’ two biggest names on defense; Woodson was named AP Defensive Player of the Year last season, and Matthews is a favorite to win it this season.

But the Packers’ biggest defensive star in the playoffs has been Williams, an up-and-coming cornerback who earned a new contract with his stellar play this season.

Williams has three interceptions in two playoff games, including a pick of Vick in the end zone to end a late-game comeback attempt by the Eagles and a momentum-seizing 70-yard interception return for a touchdown just before halftime against the Falcons.

“When these playoffs and the Super Bowl are completed, everybody in the country is going to know who Tramon Williams is,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “That’s the type of level that he’s playing at.”

McCarthy isn’t surprised at the way Williams has developed, calling him one of the team’s smartest players.

“Tramon’s the guy that’s always in the front row with his book taking the notes,” McCarthy said. “He’s been doing that since he arrived here. He has a total understanding of the defensive system. The film study, now the understanding of how the offenses are trying to attack him as far as the leverage he’s playing on a particular route. What’s exciting about Tramon, he still has a lot of football growth in his game ahead of him.”

Hawk said Williams has earned his success.

“There’s a reason he’s making huge plays, because he lives the right way,” Hawk said. “He prepares right. He is just doing everything the way you should be, I think, and he’s a great has crazy amounts of talent. But he’s doing the work to get the best out of it, I think.”

Williams insists it isn’t a “big deal” that he’s the one making game-changing plays. The way he figures, if he wasn’t making them, his teammates would be.

“I think we have lots of guys on the defense that can make those plays,” Williams said. “I think I’ve just been put in that position the last couple of weeks and made those plays.”
