Going into Monday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, the feeling is becoming familiar for the Green Bay Packers: Another week, another win, another uneasy feeling about the state of the defense.

The reigning Super Bowl champions are the NFL’s only undefeated team at 8-0 and have won a franchise-record 14 straight games going back to last season, including playoffs. It has been so long since the Packers actually lost a game that defensive players now seem to be stewing about substandard performances in victories the same way they might after a loss.

That certainly was the case after the Packers’ Oct. 23 victory at Minnesota, where Green Bay allowed rookie quarterback Christian Ponder to play with poise in his first career start and gave up 175 yards to Adrian Peterson.

“Last time, we didn’t feel like we played as good as we could have played in Minnesota,” defensive lineman Ryan Pickett said. “We feel like we could have put it away, and then we kind of let them back in the game. ‘AP’ rushed for 175 yards. We felt sick after we even won that game. So this is a good opportunity for us to right our wrongs.”

Going into the second game between the two division rivals in less than a month, the Packers are giving up 299.6 yards passing per game this season, second-most in the NFL behind New England. They nearly coughed up a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter of last Sunday’s win at San Diego.

The Packers remain dominant on offense behind Aaron Rodgers. And while their defense does lead the NFL with 16 interceptions and has been good enough to win all eight games so far, the porous nature of their pass defense means they can’t take anybody for granted.

“If you look at it, it’s kind of good,” Pickett said. “We’re feeling sick and we’re 8-0. We definitely know we’ve got a lot of room to grow, and we know we’re going to get there. Especially as a defensive unit, we have segments of great games, but we have yet to put a complete game, the way we want to play, out there. We know it’s coming, and we’re going to just keep fighting til we get there.”

Ponder helped Minnesota beat Carolina two weeks ago for his first career win — the Vikings had a bye last week — and he sees no reason why the Vikings can’t make it a game Monday night.

“That’s kind of what their defense is, bend but don’t break,” Ponder said. “They’ve given up some yards but not a lot of scoring. Obviously my two mistakes I had last game, you’ve got to be careful with the ball but capitalize with the opportunities we’re given. I think as the offense if we do things right we can be pretty good.”

And Ponder says he can play better than he did in his first career start.

“The biggest thing is we kept it close, which should give us the confidence that we can hang in with those guys,” Ponder said. “Completion percent around 40 percent’s not good. Two turnovers isn’t good. So, there’s a lot to fix there. But still, with a 40 percent completion rating with two interceptions and we still had the ability to win the game, I think that’s a good sign.”

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier has no concerns about Ponder’s poise going into a prime-time road game.

“To come out there in your first start against the defending Super Bowl champions and play as well as he play and to make some of the plays that he made in the fourth quarter, just gives you the idea that he can handle adverse situations, he can handle being on the road and playing well like he did against Carolina,” Frazier said. “I don’t foresee him being in a situation on Monday Night where you go, ‘Oh, this is not a good situation for Christian.’ I just don’t foresee that.”

The Packers still will be most worried about stopping Peterson, who says the Vikings are comfortable with Ponder at quarterback.

“I really think the sky’s the limit for him with what he has shown in the past two weeks before the bye,” Peterson said. “I feel like we can do some really good things. We just can’t keep doing things that hurt us. Offensively, defensively, make sure we’re eliminating some penalties and make sure we take advantage of the opportunities that present (themselves).”

Peterson is plenty impressed with Rodgers, who threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns with an 80 percent completion rate on Oct. 23.

“I feel like he’s the best quarterback in the league,” Peterson said. “I’ve always like Rodgers, even before he blew up. I could see the potential in him, just how he played, the attitude he played with. His passion shows. So it’s not really surprising to me.”

The Vikings’ defense will welcome back cornerback Antoine Winfield, who is set to return to the starting lineup after missing the last four games because of a neck injury. Defensive end Jared Allen leads the NFL with 12 1/2 sacks and Rodgers was sacked four times by San Diego, some of which were the result of good downfield coverage.

Still, stopping Rodgers will be a tough test for the Vikings. Linebacker E.J. Henderson made it sound like he’d rather be facing Brett Favre.

“He’s pretty hot right now,” Henderson said of Rodgers. “Even Brett in his (heyday) when we used to play the Packers he was still good for a couple three interceptions here and there. I definitely think he’s playing at a high level, we all know that, we know what a challenge it’s going to be for us Monday to come out and slow him down but we’re looking forward to it.”

What do you guys think about this.

The Green Bay Packers will make their annual appearance on Monday Night Football this coming week. They will lace it up against the rival Minnesota Vikings, and while a game against the Vikings is always a big game, this isn’t a good team in Minnesota and the Packers should win in a rout.

Over the years, the Packers have given their fans a lot of thrills and excitement on Monday Night Football. Let’s take a look at some of the great Monday night memories that involve the Green Bay Packers.

1996 – Packers vs. 49ers

This was the game that signaled the arrival of the new Green Bay Packers. Down at the half, the Packers stormed back in the second half to take the lead. Brett Favre(notes) was heating up against a good 49er team. The 49ers tied the game up at the end of regulation to force it into overtime. In the extra period, Coach Mike Holmgren allowed Green Bay kicker Chris Jacke to try a 53-yard field goal. He made it, and Green Bay now had confidence to make a Super Bowl run.

2003 – Packers vs. Raiders

We all remember this one. Playing with a heavy heart after the death of his father, Brett Favre passed for four touchdowns and 399 yards in a 41-7 Green Bay victory. There was really no question if Favre would play. “I knew that my dad would have wanted me to play,” Favre said.

1983 – Packers vs. Redskins

This was an average Green Bay Packer team against a Super Bowl contender in the Washington Redskins. To say it featured a lot of scoring is an understatement. Washington’s ace kicker Mark Moseley missed a 39-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to give the Packers a surprise 48-47 victory.

2004 Packers vs. Panthers

This was a big win for the Packers. The Carolina Panthers were coming off a Super Bowl appearance, and this was the Monday Night opener. The Packers stunned a overflow crowd and some of their own fans with a 24-14 win in Charlotte.

1984 Packers vs. Broncos

Everybody likes watching an NFL game in a blizzard. The nation had a chance to watch the Packers play the Denver Broncos in this one. A fall snow hit Denver and the Packers fumbled on their first two possessions giving the Broncos a 14-0 lead. The Pack stormed back but came up a little short in this entertaining game falling 17-14.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Green Bay Packers three-time Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins will be lost for the season after suffering a head/neck injury Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

Mike McCarthy led off his Monday press conference with the news that Collins’ injury was more serious than the Packers coach knew the last time he addressed the media Sunday following a 30-23 road victory.

“When I had the press conference yesterday, the information I had when I walked into the press conference was that the first two tests were positive,” McCarthy said. “But once I got out of the press conference, the information went the other way.”

Collins, 28, spent the night in a Charlotte hospital and returned to the Packers’ practice facility Monday afternoon. McCarthy said Collins wasn’t in pain but that he would get a second opinion and that the team was still gathering information.

“I literally just got done talking to him,” McCarthy said. “He had a neck brace on and dress clothes and was walking around. You would never know he had a serious injury (by the way he was acting).”

Collins was injured as he dove to tackle Jonathan Stewart after the Panthers running back made a fourth-quarter reception. Collins’ head hit Stewart’s hip, and Collins’ head bent awkwardly. Collins waved to the crowd while on a stretcher leaving the field. Later Sunday, the Packers said he had “normal feeling and complete movement” in his extremities.

McCarthy said Monday it was too early to speculate on Collins’ future beyond this season, but he seemed optimistic he would return to football.

“You never take it lightly, but it’s really too early in the evaluation process to make those kind of statements,” McCarthy said. “It’s definitely something he’s going to miss the season over.”

Sixth-year backup Charlie Peprah filled in for Collins on Sunday and will continue to for the rest of the season. In the meantime, McCarthy and the Packers’ thoughts are with Collins, and the hope is he’ll be back on the field in 2012.

“He’s very positive,” the coach said. “He’s probably handling it a lot better than a lot of us.

“You look at the first half of his career; he’s on pace to have a Hall of Fame career. Hopefully, this is just a bump in the road. Nick is just all about football. It’s a great asset to have to see No. 36 flying around there.”

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay Packers' defensive leader is ageless cornerback who earned his seventh Pro Bowl selection this year

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers’ defensive leader is ageless cornerback

who earned his seventh Pro Bowl selection this year. According to the statistics kept by the Packers coaches, the 34-year-old Woodson had a career high in two categories, with 105 tackles and five forced fumbles. He also intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown.

He figures to be a central figure in Sunday’s playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field against the Eagles.

Now in his 13th season, Woodson said with all the talk about Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, he is highly impressed with the Birds’ receiving corps led by DeSean Jackson.

“They have got big-play guys, especially Jackson,” said Woodson, who started all 16 games for the third year in a row. “He is probably one of the fastest guys in the NFL.”

So the game plan is simple, but executing it is more difficult.

“We have to do our job in the back end – and as far as rushing, we have to stay in our lanes, not get too far upfield and let Vick escape out there on the field,” Woodson said.

Woodson could be one of those players rushing Vick. He had just two sacks this season, but one came in Sunday’s 10-3 playoff-clinching win over Chicago. Woodson also had a quarterback hurry as the Packers weren’t afraid to utilize the former Heisman Trophy winner in their blitz packages.

“He’s a future Hall of Fame player,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said about Woodson during his Monday news conference. “He’s a good player and they play him in the nickel position, that’s how they played us last time.”

Mutual respect

There will be no bulletin board material traveling from Green Bay to Philadelphia, at least from Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

The fifth-year head coach had nothing but praise when speaking of the Eagles during his Monday news conference. Most of all, he lauded his counterpart, saying that Reid has done a “fantastic” job this season.

“[Reid] has been able to ride through the challenges of an NFL season, playing two different quarterbacks and Michael Vick is playing his best football of his career,” said McCarthy, who has guided Green Bay to the playoffs in three of his five seasons. “They went with some younger guys on defense and they really challenge you schematically.”

Checking tape

Even though so much has changed since the Packers beat the Eagles, 27-20, on opening day, Sept. 12, McCarthy said he will definitely be able to take a lot from scouting the tape of that game.

“You want to look at the personnel matchups,” McCarthy said. “I know they have had some injuries, we have had some injuries, but we will definitely go back. That will be the first game I’ll start with.”

Injury update

The Packers, who have 15 players on the injured reserve list, came out of Sunday’s game against Chicago with no further injuries, according to McCarthy. He said that four players who were deactivated on Sunday – safety Atari Bigby (groin), fullback Korey Hall (knee), linebacker Frank Zombo (knee) and defensive end Cullen Jenkins (calf) will go through testing and be evaluated on Wednesday.

“They’re making progress and we’re hopeful that maybe they can have a trial return for Wednesday,” McCarthy said.

Prophetic statement

Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop, who had six tackles in Sunday’s win over the Bears, recalled a conversation with Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel after Green Bay’s opening win this year.

“We beat them and were celebrating, and as they were walking off the field Asante Samuel was angry and said, ‘We’ll see you in the playoffs,’ ” Bishop recalled. “That was Game One and I took it as he was angry – but it has come to pass.”
