The roots of prep football in Wisconsin run deep. Unfortunately for one school, the roots of Green Bay Packers football run a bit deeper, even when the only thing on the line is a meaningless preseason game for one of the NFL’s most storied franchises.

According to the Associated Press and a handful of other sources, Green Bay (Wisc.) Notre Dame de la Baie Academy decided to move up its season-opening home game against Manitowoc (Wisc.) Lincoln High on Friday from 7 p.m. to 4 p.m. There’s an obvious reason why they’re doing so: The Packers have their preseason home opener — the first competitive or non-competitive game played at Lambeau Field (pictured above in post Super Bowl celebratory delirium) since the team’s Super Bowl victory against the Steelers in February — scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. just down the road.

While one can understand why the Tritons would buckle to the pressure of bumping schedules with the reigning Super Bowl champs, doing so comes at a steep price, since they will no longer get to play their own season opener under Friday night lights.

“We’re so close to Lambeau Field and we’re right in the traffic flow at Mason Street that we do not like hosting events for traffic and safety of our kids,” Notre Dame athletic director Ken Flatten told WLUK-TV.

Of course, you’d think that the people most upset about the schedule conflict would be the players themselves, who miss out on the traditional rite of passage of looking up into the floodlights on a warm August night. Yet for Notre Dame’s game, at least one notable player said he thought the decision to move the game’s kickoff time was a win-win adjustment for everyone involved.

“I don’t think it’s a big deal,” Notre Dame quarterback Paul Allen told WLUK. “It’s a home game, now people can see both games.”

Given the proximity of the two stadiums, fans and players alike might even be able to see both games in person. If anything is worth giving up that first Friday of high school football under the lights, an afternoon of high school football followed by an Aaron Rodgers championship belt performance might be it … at least if you’re a teen in Wisconsin.

A sense of relief was evident Monday among several local businesses that thrive on Green Bay Packers football after a mid-day announcement that National Football League players OK’d a labor deal with owners.

The deal, which effectively ends a 4½-month lockout, puts to rest uncertainty over the upcoming season.

At Days Inn Lambeau Field, general manager Julie Jackson said business already had been on the rise in recent days. Late last week, it appeared a deal was in the works.

“The phones have been busy with reservations” for training camp and preseason games, she said Monday afternoon. “For the regular season, we’re pretty much sold out for every game, and it’s been like that for a while.”

Had the stalemate dragged on, Days Inn stood to lose about 30 percent of its annual revenue.

“We were very concerned,” Jackson said.

On the other side of Lambeau Field, Kroll’s West manager Cheryl Dorner expressed similar relief.

Despite a summer of labor talks between NFL players and owners, she said business remained strong.

“Business will probably pick up a little more,” she said. “But we still get a lot of out-of-town people coming here to look at the Lambeau Field Atrium.”

The agreement heads off the worst-case scenario for the Greater Green Bay Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“My biggest concern was the loss of a preseason game, or especially a regular-season game,” said Brad Toll, president and CEO of the bureau. “There isn’t any way for us to be able to make up the loss of a game from a tax revenue and revenue-generating point of view.”

Toll said the area had a number of other events that helped bolster the local economy this summer, including the Kenny Chesney concert at Lambeau Field, visitors at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help and the 2011 U.S. Youth Soccer Midwest Regional Championships, which was spread between Green Bay and the Fox Cities.

Tourism numbers have been on an upswing so far this year, he said.

“We were kind of holding our breath, because this could have let the wind out of the sail again if we would have started to lose part of the season,” Toll said.

(PACKERS.COM)– Members of the 2010 Green Bay Packers will receive their Super Bowl championship rings on Thursday, June 16, in a ceremony that will connect the team for the first time since it left Dallas following the Packers’ win on Feb. 6 in Super Bowl XLV.

The NFL has granted the Packers a special exemption from the league’s no-contact policy during the lockout, should the lockout still be in effect. The ceremony will take place at the Lambeau Field Atrium.

“We’re looking forward to having an evening for the players, coaches and organization to recognize the victory in Super Bowl XLV,” Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy said.

“It was an extraordinary season and the players earned their rings in very exciting fashion. We’re going to celebrate all the hard work that went into the championship. We’re excited for the evening.”

Read More: Greg Jennings (WR – GBP), Jordy Nelson (WR – GBP), Aaron Rodgers (QB – GBP), Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers Super Bowl XLV celebration, which is still not a parade, brought their non-Aaron Rodgers offensive stars on stage to address the Lambeau Field crowd.

Greg Jennings, clearly feeling the freezing weather, said “the fans deserved” the Super Bowl win and described the receiving corps’ trip to Jordy Nelson’s farm, where “strange things” happened — talk about raising more questions than you answer! Jennings also insisted on James Jones being included onstage.

Longtime Packers WR Donad Driver got the biggest cheer of the night so far while walking around with protective gear on his foot. Blowing kisses to the crowd, he said the Lombardi Trophy was now home.

Nelson answered a question about how it feels to be a Super Bowl champion while wearing a purple and yellow hoodie and beanie, ordinarily a no-no in Lambeau Field.

Offensive line representative Scott Wells talked about his lack of sleep and how handsome centers tend to be.

Touchdown specialist John Kuhn sounds like the team’s most likely future politician, emphatically proclaiming the team’s blue-collar nature.

Before the offense took the stage, special teamers got some love. Best moment: Jarrett Bush said, “I tip my hat” to Packers special teams teammates, but did not in fact remove his huge black, green, and yellow beanie.

Also, Mason Crosby claimed the team imported Green Bay weather down to Dallas and then nerded out on some kicker jargon, critiquing himself for compressing the Super Bowl’s opening kickoff.

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

The world’s fastest Super Bowl celebration continued, with the Green Bay Packers bringing Mike McCarthy, Ted Thompson, and Mark Murphy on stage for some remarks. McCarthy, clad in a dark coat and newsboy hat, got the most mic time:

It’s great to be here. I just want to thank the fans. You’re clearly an energy force for our football team. Keep [something about bringing energy and passion] and we’ll keep bringing them trophies back to you … After we lost the Arizona game last year, in the exit interviews the players felt very strongly that we could win a championship. Unbelievable support from Packer Nation, and we’re gonna do it again next year.

General manager Thompson made a flub that few Packers fans likely minded all that much:

Thank you. Thank you. It’s a great day to be a Packer, isn’t it? This is a great group of guys. It took everybody on the team to win this thing. But the Lambeau — Lombardi Trophy is back in Green Bay. Thank you.

And owner Murphy is already on his coach’s behind about next year:

We’ve gotta start winning some more to catch up with Lombardi.

More to come from Lambeau Field.

The Chicago Bears seemingly have nothing to play for.

The Chicago Bears seemingly have nothing to play for. The Green Bay Packers aren’t nearly as fortunate.

While a loss combined with considerable help would put the Packers back in the playoffs, they’d prefer the more direct path by beating the arch-rival Bears in the regular-season finale at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

Chicago (11-4) has already clinched its third NFC North title in six seasons and secured a first-round playoff bye heading into the final week of the regular season.

Green Bay (9-6), meanwhile, kept its playoff hopes alive with a dominating performance in a 45-17 win over the New York Giants, denting their chances at the postseason.

Now, the Packers just need to beat the Bears to get in. However, a loss would require the Giants to lose to Washington and Tampa Bay to fall to New Orleans. In that scenario, the Packers would win a three-way tiebreaker at 9-7 over the Buccaneers and Giants.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy prefers the simpler route.

“We need to get to 10 wins, and until we get to 10 wins nothing else matters,” he said. “That’s where we stand. We’re focused on win No. 10 against the Chicago Bears. Scenarios, I couldn’t even tell you what they are.”

One scenario that could work to Green Bay’s benefit is Chicago resting players ahead of the playoffs, and Bears coach Lovie Smith isn’t ruling that out.

“I don’t think if guys get 20 less plays in a game then all of a sudden they stop playing good football. I just don’t see it that way,” he said.

The Packers are 6-1 at Lambeau, and have outscored opponents 124-40 in winning their last three there.

That’s partly why their offense ranks eighth in the NFL, and Aaron Rodgers(notes) is coming off perhaps his best performance of the season.

Rodgers posted season highs of 404 passing yards and a 139.9 passer rating while completing 25 of 37 passes with four touchdowns against the Giants. He had missed a 31-27 loss at New England the previous week due to his second concussion of the season.

“A lot of things have happened both positively and negatively that we might not have expected, but we go into the last game of the season with a chance to make the playoffs with a win and that’s all we can ask for right now,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers thrives at Lambeau, and his 115.7 rating there is the highest among NFL quarterbacks playing at home this season. He’s thrown 18 of his 27 touchdowns at home with five interceptions.

Rodgers’ career 104.6 rating is by far the highest for any quarterback at Lambeau, and 17.4 points higher than Brett Favre(notes) in second place among Packers signal callers.

He’s also won his two home starts against the Bears, completing 69.0 percent of his passes for 411 yards with three TDs and one pick.

The Packers, though, lost 20-17 at Chicago on Sept. 27, as Robbie Gould(notes) connected on a 19-yard field goal with 4 seconds left to win it for the Bears.

Chicago may not mind spoiling Green Bay’s season and sweeping its fiercest rival in order to finish 6-0 in the division.

The Bears further proved they could handle a highly ranked defense last week, scoring three third-quarter touchdowns and gaining 322 yards of offense in a 38-34 win over the playoff-bound New York Jets last week.

“We’re playing the way we expected this offense to be,” said running back Matt Forte(notes), who had 113 yards rushing and a touchdown on 19 carries to become the first player to top the century mark against the Jets in over a year.

Forte is averaging 5.7 yards per carry over the last five games, and is 22 yards shy of reaching 1,000 for the first time since his 2008 rookie season. His re-emergence might be a reason Jay Cutler(notes) has been superb over the last five games.

He’s compiled a 104.2 rating while completing 60.7 percent of his passes for 1,042 yards with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions in that span.

Cutler has thrown for six scores while running for another in the last two weeks.

He didn’t fare well in a 21-15 loss at Lambeau in Week 1 last season, tossing one TD with four interceptions.

Still, the Bears are confident and feel they’ve silenced many critics.

“I think that the team has done a tremendous job,” safety Chris Harris(notes) said. “We kind of had everything against us. Nobody really believed except the guys in the locker room, and we still expect it to be that way. We’re happy (with) the position we’re in. We’re happy (with) the position we put ourselves in to get a first-round bye in the playoffs.”

The Packers are also feeling confident, and linebacker Desmond Bishop(notes) thinks they might be in for a deep playoff run provided they reach the postseason.

“I don’t want to sound cocky or anything, but if we can put together four quarters we can do that to pretty much everybody,” he said of the performance against the Giants. “And that’s just the kind of talent and the kind of will that we have on this team – offense, defense and special teams. If we can put four (quarters) together like that, we’re dangerous.”

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.
