New England, the top seed in the AFC with a 13-3 record, and New Orleans, No. 3 in the NFC, haven’t lost in the second half of the schedule. Like Green Bay (15-1), both have dynamic, sometimes unstoppable offenses led by magnificent quarterbacks, bolstered by a deep and dangerous group of receivers.

All three also have so-so defenses that often require Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady to win shootouts. That’s a difficult way to prosper in the postseason, particularly when playing against a rugged, versatile defense such as the 49ers, Ravens and Texans possess.

“A lot of it is working on what we need to work on; working on things that have been a problem for us, that if they come up again we need to handle better,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said, not mentioning in particular a penchant for falling into deep holes. New England rallied from 17-0 and 21-0 deficits to win its past two games.

Remember, also, that New England has lost its past three postseason games, including at home to the Ravens and Jets the past two years.

Behind Brees’ record-setting performances, the Saints soared past all eight opponents at home, but if they can handle the Lions next Saturday night in the Superdome, then they must head to San Francisco. And if they get by the formidable Niners, who rode a stingy, big-play defense to a 13-3 mark, a date at potentially frigid Lambeau Field is likely.

That is, if the Giants don’t start partying like it’s 2007. They were seeded fifth that year, but closed the regular season with a close loss to unbeaten New England. Then the Giants knocked off division winners Tampa Bay, Dallas and Green Bay before shocking the Patriots for the championship.

New York won three of its last four, including impressive defensive efforts in wins over the Jets and Cowboys to grab the NFC East title. Defense was an issue for much of the season, but with the pass rush suddenly reborn, the Giants can be dangerous.

“Different guys, different teams. I’d love to have the same ending as the ‘07 team,” Giants guard Chris Snee said. “We certainly have the capability of doing that, as we have shown. I’m happy just to be in the playoffs. We’ll take it from there. I don’t spend too much time reminiscing about that glorious time in our life.”

Baltimore, like New Orleans and Green Bay, went 8-0 at home and is an entirely different team on the road (4-4). Still, with some help from outside — ironically, the AFC North rival Steelers are the most likely to provide it — the Ravens might not have to leave the Inner Harbor to get to Indianapolis in February.

Gotta run!.

JANESVILLE, Wis. — A Janesville man is hoping to make history by becoming the 14th member of the Green Bay Packers Fan Hall of Fame.Joe Kuhar is one of 10 finalists selected, and it only takes one look at his basement to understand why he made the cut.”I just love football,” Kuhar said. His love of football, specifically the Green Bay Packers, has taken over his basement, which his friends and family have nicknamed the Packers Hall of Fame South.”Every day, things change down here (in the basement). Monday after a football game, I’m on my computer,” Kuhar said.He spends several hours keeping statistics and creating handmade photo rosters, which now cover his ceilings.

Most of the memorabilia is autographed by Green Bay legends.”This is an autographed helmet with Brett Favre and Bart Starr,” Kuhar said.Kuhar even asked to try out for the team in 1960. The day he met Bart Starr in Janesville in 2010, he said they shared a laugh over his rejection letter.”I told him how I could have been a teammate of his because he was playing for the Packers at that time, and he got a big kick out of that,” Kuhar said.Four of Kuhar’s five children are Packers fans.”I invite people over even when he’s not here. I say, ‘Do you want to see my dad’s basement?’” said his youngest daughter, Larae Kuhar. She wrote the letter nominating her father for the Green Bay Packers Fan Hall of Fame.”I think he deserves to win, not just because of what he has but because of his dedication. He deserves it,” she said.Kuhar said he’s proud of his collection and that it would be one of the highlights of his life to be honored by his favorite team.”As soon as I found out, I started calling everyone in my family and all my friends, giving them the heads up to vote for me,” Kuhar said.Joe and his wife are celebrating their 53rd wedding anniversary on Tuesday, and he said she supports his “Hall of Fame South” as long as it doesn’t creep up the staircase and into the rest of the house.Voting for the Packer Fan Hall of Fame begins on Jan. 1, 2012, on Packers.com. The winner will be announced at an event at Lambeau Field on Valentine’s Day.

The business at hand for the unbeaten Green Bay Packers is a chance to lock up the No.

The business at hand for the unbeaten Green Bay Packers is a chance to lock up the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs Sunday and ensure the road to Super Bowl XVLI travels through Lambeau Field. But quarterback Aaron Rodgers can’t resist looking ahead to the Christmas night showdown against the Chicago Bears.

With a victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, the Packers (13-0) will ensure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. After that, they would love to make sure the Bears are home for the playoffs.

“I’ll just say that I think, as players, we would probably like to finish this thing out if we get a chance,” Rodgers said Wednesday of the team’s goals for the stretch run, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “And (have) a chance to maybe keep the Bears and the Lions out of the playoffs like the Bears tried to do to us last year.”

The talk in Green Bay is about a run at 16-0 and then 19-0. Green Bay can become the first defending Super Bowl champion to start the next season 14-0 if it beats a reeling Kansas City Chiefs team Sunday. The debate after that is how to handle playing time in the final two games that will have no impact on playoff seeding.

The Bears went to Lambeau Field for the regular-season finale last year. When the game began, Lovie Smith’s team already was locked into the No. 2 seed in the NFC. The Bears played their starters throughout and went for the victory. The Packers, who had to win to get into the playoffs, prevailed 10-3. That loss came back to haunt the Bears three weeks later when Green Bay beat them again in the NFC title game at Soldier Field.

For the Bears (7-6) to keep their fading playoff hopes alive, they need to defeat the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday before they can worry about the Packers.

Aaron Rodgers(notes) has picked apart opposing defenses with ease in leading the Green Bay Packers to their best start in nearly 50 years. Things don’t seem likely to go any differently against a winless St. Louis Rams team that is without both starting cornerbacks

Aaron Rodgers(notes) has picked apart opposing defenses with ease in leading the
Green Bay Packers to their best start in nearly 50 years. Things don’t seem
likely to go any differently against a winless St. Louis Rams team that is
without both starting cornerbacks.

Rodgers looks to lead the undefeated Packers to an eighth straight win at
Lambeau Field on Sunday against the struggling Rams, who own the league’s worst
road record over the past four seasons.

Green Bay’s perfect record was in a little jeopardy Sunday night in Atlanta,
as the Packers fell behind 14-0 in the second quarter. But Rodgers kept his
composure and threw two second-half touchdowns to rally Green Bay to a 25-14
win.

“It was a choppy game but we persevered,” said Rodgers, who finished with
396 passing yards – his fourth 300-yard game of the season. “We expect to win
when we take the field.”

Green Bay fans might also be expecting another Super Bowl. The Packers
improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1965 and seventh time in franchise
history. Each of the previous six, Green Bay went on to win an NFL title.

“5-0 feels great,” cornerback Charles Woodson(notes) said, “but we’re looking at
greatness.”

The Packers have won 11 straight dating to last season, including their
march to the Super Bowl title. They’ve also won seven in a row and 13 of 14 at
Lambeau Field, while the Rams are an NFL-worst 4-21 on the road since 2008.

“We’re building something here,” Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said.

That starts with Rodgers.

He leads the NFL with a 122.9 quarterback rating and a 71.7 completion
percentage and is tied for the league lead with 14 touchdowns along with only
two interceptions. His Packers are the highest-scoring team in the NFL,
averaging 34.6 points.

“They’re scary good,” Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “But we’ve got
players out here, too. We’ve got to go play the game. We’ve got to find a way to
slow them down and see if we can’t have one more point than they do.”

That seems like a tall order for the Rams (0-4), who have been outscored
113-46 this season.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t frustrated,” linebacker James Laurinaitis(notes)
said after a 17-10 home loss to Washington on Oct. 2, before the team’s bye
week.

St. Louis had an extra week to prepare for this challenge, but in the
process it lost starting cornerback Bradley Fletcher(notes) to a season-ending knee
injury.

Fletcher got hurt in practice last Wednesday when he stepped on Mike
Sims-Walker’s(notes) foot during a drill. He’s the seventh cornerback injured since
training camp for the Rams, who had to place starter Ron Bartell(notes) on injured
reserve after he sustained two fractures in his neck in the opener.

The 36-year-old Al Harris(notes), who starred with the Packers from 2003-09, and
Rod Hood(notes), signed in late September and coming off reconstructive knee surgery in
June, are expected to see significant playing time.

“Rod and Al are going to have to play some football, otherwise we don’t have
enough,” Spagnuolo said.

The Packers are also a bit banged-up, with left tackle Chad Clifton(notes) and
right tackle Bryan Bulaga(notes) battling injuries, but that hasn’t seemed to make much
difference to Green Bay’s offense. Clifton (hamstring) is expected to miss a
couple of weeks, while Bulaga (left knee) has missed the last two games but
could return Sunday.

Facing a makeshift offensive line, the Rams will try to put pressure on
Rodgers, but their eight sacks are tied for fourth-fewest in the NFL and they
failed to get one in their last game.

Sam Bradford(notes) was sacked a career-high seven times by the Redskins, throwing
for 164 yards – the third time this season he’s failed to reach 200. He didn’t
get much help from Steven Jackson, who finished with 45 rushing yards on 17
carries.

Jackson has rushed for 260 yards in his last two games against the Packers,
but will be facing a Green Bay defense that ranks third against the run,
allowing an average of 75.8 yards.

This is the first meeting between these teams since Sept. 27, 2009, when
Rodgers passed for 269 yards with two touchdowns in a 36-17 road victory. The
Packers also beat the Rams 33-14 in 2007.

The NFL commercial featuring a faceoff between a Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints fan outside Lambeau Field is in regular rotation as NBC and the league gear up for Thursday’s regular season kickoff.

While the ad pits New Orleans fans and Green Bay fans against each other, only the New Orleans second line brass band that plays “When the Saints Go Marching In” in the ad is actually from the Big Easy. The other Saints “fans” are really Packers fans who dressed up to support the other team.

More than 200 people took part in filming the commercial on Aug. 12 in Green Bay.

The NBC Sports Agency came up with the concept to showcase a game featuring the past two Super Bowl champions.

The “grill guy” in the commercial who says “Back to football!” is really Mike Kostelnik, the son of Ron Kostelnik, who won five NFL championships as a player for the Packers in the 1960s.

The roots of prep football in Wisconsin run deep. Unfortunately for one school, the roots of Green Bay Packers football run a bit deeper, even when the only thing on the line is a meaningless preseason game for one of the NFL’s most storied franchises.

According to the Associated Press and a handful of other sources, Green Bay (Wisc.) Notre Dame de la Baie Academy decided to move up its season-opening home game against Manitowoc (Wisc.) Lincoln High on Friday from 7 p.m. to 4 p.m. There’s an obvious reason why they’re doing so: The Packers have their preseason home opener — the first competitive or non-competitive game played at Lambeau Field (pictured above in post Super Bowl celebratory delirium) since the team’s Super Bowl victory against the Steelers in February — scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. just down the road.

While one can understand why the Tritons would buckle to the pressure of bumping schedules with the reigning Super Bowl champs, doing so comes at a steep price, since they will no longer get to play their own season opener under Friday night lights.

“We’re so close to Lambeau Field and we’re right in the traffic flow at Mason Street that we do not like hosting events for traffic and safety of our kids,” Notre Dame athletic director Ken Flatten told WLUK-TV.

Of course, you’d think that the people most upset about the schedule conflict would be the players themselves, who miss out on the traditional rite of passage of looking up into the floodlights on a warm August night. Yet for Notre Dame’s game, at least one notable player said he thought the decision to move the game’s kickoff time was a win-win adjustment for everyone involved.

“I don’t think it’s a big deal,” Notre Dame quarterback Paul Allen told WLUK. “It’s a home game, now people can see both games.”

Given the proximity of the two stadiums, fans and players alike might even be able to see both games in person. If anything is worth giving up that first Friday of high school football under the lights, an afternoon of high school football followed by an Aaron Rodgers championship belt performance might be it … at least if you’re a teen in Wisconsin.

Aug 17, 2011 – On Friday evening at famous Lambeau Field two of the NFL’s oldest and storied franchises will meet for their 21st preseason game. History runs deep between the Arizona Cardinals and the Green Bay Packers and the blood, sweat and tears will flow once more at 5:00 p.m. PT as Week 2 of the NFL preseason continues. You, good fans, will be seated on your couch or in your reclining chair with your favorite beverage and snacks at hand as you turn your television sets to ABC Channel 15 and let the sound of the battling warriors wash over you.

(If that paragraph made no sense, try clicking here and playing this music while reading it again.)

Cardinals’ coach Ken Whisenhunt has made it clear this week that he has no intention of adjusting his plan to meet the strengths or weaknesses of the Green Bay Packers. Whiz has an agenda for his team that includes familiarizing his offense with the offense and to test the defense against the Packers offense.

In Week 1 of the preseason, the Cardinals played 80 players and were pleased with all four of their quarterbacks who racked up a combined 297 yards, three TDs and a 126.7 passer rating. The running backs looked good at times with rookie Ryan Williams perhaps even pushing Beanie Wells for the starting job.

This week at camp, the defense has reportedly reasserted itself after getting sand kicked in their faces early on. It will be nice to see if we see any improvement there on Friday both from the pass rush and the secondary.

GREEN BAY – Ahman Green, the leading rusher in Green Bay
Packers’ history, will officially announce his retirement in a
press conference at Lambeau Field at 6:30 p.m. today.

Green gained 8,322 yards on 1,851 carries, both team records, in
eight seasons with the Packers, from 2000 to 2006 and in 2009. He
surpassed Jim Taylor, who had 8,207 yards on 1,811 carries, during
the 2009 season.

The 6-foot, 217-pounder from the University of Nebraska led the
Packers in rushing a record six times, from 2000 to 2004 and in
2006.

Green’s best season was 2003, when he set team single-season
records of 1,883 yards and 355 carries and had 10 games of 100 or
more yards.

He ran wild in the 2003 season finale at Lambeau Field, setting
a single-game record of 218 yards on 20 carries with a team-record
98-yard run for a touchdown in a 31-3 rout of the Denver Broncos on
Dec. 28.

Green also twice had four straight 100-yard games in 2003, with
the second streak carrying over to the 2004 season.

His other Packers career records include 33 games of 100 or more
yards rushing.

Green came to the Packers in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks
on April 15, 2000. General Manager Ron Wolf sent cornerback Fred
Vinson and a sixth-round draft pick to Seattle for Green and a
fifth-round draft pick.

Green left the Packers in free agency in 2007, signing with the
Houston Texans. Slowed by injuries, he played in only 14 games over
two seasons with the Texans, gaining 554 yards.

The Packers re-signed Green as a free agent in 2009. He played
in eight games as a backup to Ryan Grant, gaining 160 yards.

Green broke Taylor’s career rushing record on a 2-yard gain
during the fourth quarter of a 38-28 loss to the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers in Tampa, Fla., on Nov. 8, 2009.

Green played with his hometown Omaha Nighthawks of the United
Football League in 2010. He went to training camp with the Montreal
Alouettes of the Canadian Football League earlier this year, but
injured a hamstring and was released.

Now 34, Green lives in the Green Bay area, where he’s a
volunteer football coach at De Pere High School. Earlier this week,
he was hired by the Big Ten Network as a sideline analyst.

“It hurt,” Matthews said Wednesday. “I don’t know what you’d relate it to, but it hurt pretty good.”

Matthews needed time off from practice to recover, but the injury didn’t stop him from playing each week. He said the leg was fine by the end of the regular season and didn’t hold him back from helping the Packers get hot in the playoffs to win the Super Bowl.

“I wouldn’t have put myself out there on the field if I was going to hurt this team,” said Matthews, who finished with a team-high 17 sacks, including the playoffs.

After taking a month off following the win over Pittsburgh, Matthews trained hard at home in an offseason dominated by the NFL lockout and says he is pain-free for the start of this season.

Matthews has missed only one practice — the storm-shortened Family Night workout at Lambeau Field last weekend – in the first two weeks of camp.

Matthews also expects to play in the Packers’ preseason opener Saturday at Cleveland, though he hadn’t received word from the coaches as of Wednesday about his status for the game. Matthews suited up for only one preseason game his first two years as a pro because of recurring hamstring injuries.

“I joke with him this is actually his first camp fully participating,” nose tackle B.J. Raji said. “So, I was impressed with that, just how he was able to come out of the gate flying.”

Of course, Matthews did the same thing last year after missing most of camp with an injured hamstring. He had three sacks in each of the first two games, the only Packer to do that in back-to-back outings.

So whether Matthews needs the live reps in preseason play is an argument he said cuts both ways.

“Obviously, I’ve been able to do it last year, for instance, coming off missing all four preseason games and showing up on the first game being ready to roll,” Matthews said. “But at the same time, you want to be out there to really sharpen your skill knowing that you’re out there and you’re ready to roll.”

The Packers open the regular season Sept. 8 against New Orleans, but Matthews feels strong enough physically and mentally to start playing the games that count now.

“I think I’m ready to go as far as it may take others four or five weeks to get ready for the season, I feel like I can do it off maybe a week or two of work,” Matthews said.

He reported lighter for camp in late July after going full throttle six days a week for about four months with his personal trainer in Southern California. The cardiovascular workouts enhanced Matthews’ conditioning and endurance.

“It was good as far as the running schedule I was on, when I wanted to peak going into camp and taking some time off here and there,” Matthews said. “It was really strategically mapped out, so I think that’s what’s really helped me out so far.”

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — As far as Green Bay Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy is concerned, the NFL lockout deprived the team’s fans of a proper chance to celebrate a Super Bowl victory.

With labor peace arriving, Murphy says it’s time for Packers fans to enjoy the buildup to a new season.

“I don’t know about you,” Murphy told an estimated 11,700 shareholders gathered for the franchise’s annual meeting at Lambeau Field on Thursday. “But I felt a little short-changed in terms of our celebration.”

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Murphy said he hopes a lot of fans will turn out for Saturday night’s first training camp practice and subsequent events.

“I really do feel for our fans,” Murphy said. “I mean, it was an unbelievable experience, and we celebrated. But having the lockout start so soon after that, a lot of us felt like it cut short the celebration. Quite honestly, personally, because I’m on the bargaining committee, it was very shortly after we had the Super Bowl.”

But as fans celebrate, Murphy says the team won’t be resting on its reputation.

There will be plenty of hype for the Sept. 8 regular season opener against New Orleans, including several days’ worth of festivities and a pregame concert. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to attend.

But in terms of celebrating the Super Bowl title before and during the game itself, Murphy says the team will have to strike a balance.

“I’d say there’s a little bit of a conflict there, because from a football standpoint, obviously we’re excited and glad we won the Super Bowl,” Murphy said. “But we’ve got to turn the focus on to winning the next championship.”

Murphy said attendance at Thursday’s shareholders meeting was the highest in recent memory, a sign that fans are ready to embrace the Packers and the NFL after a trying summer of labor negotiations.

The Packers used the meeting to highlight their strong financial performance in 2010-11. The team reported a $12 million profit from operations for 2010-2011, up $2.2 million from the previous year. The overall net income was $17.1 million — a jump of nearly $12 million over last year, due in large part to improved performance by investments.

But the meeting wasn’t all business. Actor Dan Lauria, who has played legendary Packers coach Vince Lombardi in the Broadway play “Lombardi,” read lines from the play in character after the meeting.

“It’s uncanny how similar he is to Vince Lombardi,” Murphy said. “I think the cast really enjoyed being here at Lambeau Field. Some of them have been up before, but I think to be here and to see the shareholder meeting gives them a sense of the history and tradition and uniqueness of the Packers.”

The Packers unveiled a new stadium sound system Thursday, and Murphy said the team would be adding new high-definition video boards in 2012. The new video boards will be roughly four times the size of the current boards — but, as Murphy joked, “not quite as big as the Cowboys’ board.”

Beyond that, the Packers are moving forward on plans to add approximately 7,000 seats to the south end zone area, although no firm timeline has been established for the project. The Packers also are still considering the possibility of developing additional businesses in the area surrounding Lambeau. Those plans could include a youth sports complex, a health center and an exhibition hall.

“We continue to look at that,” Murphy said. “And those, I would say, are really more going to be in partnership with the local community going forward. And I think there’s a lot of sense in doing it.”

Meanwhile, Murphy said there hasn’t been any movement toward an eventual reconciliation with former quarterback Brett Favre. Murphy has said several times in the past that the team eventually will retire Favre’s number, but Murphy said Thursday that the Packers want to wait until the timing is right for Favre and for the organization.

“There hasn’t been, at least officially, any contact,” Murphy said. “But yeah, I think our plans are still to definitely retire his number. He deserves that, what he accomplished during his career as a Packer.”

WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE—

Green Bay Packers brass held their annual stockholders meeting at Lambeau Field on Thursday and it was all smiles for those who own a symbolic chunk of the Super Bowl Champs. With the players set to begin practice, shareholders tell us they believe it can be done again.

Nearly 12,000 stockholders own the Green Bay Packers and made their way back to Lambeau Field for the first time since the Super Bowl win. Stockholder Joe Dindorf of Brookfield brought his son Mike along this year. Mike said, “He taught me to become a Packers fan and to hate the bears. All the things that are important.”

Years ago Joe gave his entire family a unique gift. “I bought shares for all my kids. My daughter and my two sons and of course myself.” That allows Dindorf’s to hear personally from management of their beloved green and gold.

A Super Bowl win and a lockout in the rear view mirror, shareholders are ready to see their team on the field.

Packers brass say the team is financially healthy, making more than $17 million last year. Appreciative shareholders clapped with each item of good news. They even gave a standing ovation for the work of their general manager.

Football is more than a business. It’s a chance to share a passion.

Shares for the packers were last sold in 1998. They are worth $200 and will never go up in value and they don’t pay dividends. More than 112,000 people own stock in the Green Bay Packers.

That’s all the news for today.

A sense of relief was evident Monday among several local businesses that thrive on Green Bay Packers football after a mid-day announcement that National Football League players OK’d a labor deal with owners.

The deal, which effectively ends a 4½-month lockout, puts to rest uncertainty over the upcoming season.

At Days Inn Lambeau Field, general manager Julie Jackson said business already had been on the rise in recent days. Late last week, it appeared a deal was in the works.

“The phones have been busy with reservations” for training camp and preseason games, she said Monday afternoon. “For the regular season, we’re pretty much sold out for every game, and it’s been like that for a while.”

Had the stalemate dragged on, Days Inn stood to lose about 30 percent of its annual revenue.

“We were very concerned,” Jackson said.

On the other side of Lambeau Field, Kroll’s West manager Cheryl Dorner expressed similar relief.

Despite a summer of labor talks between NFL players and owners, she said business remained strong.

“Business will probably pick up a little more,” she said. “But we still get a lot of out-of-town people coming here to look at the Lambeau Field Atrium.”

The agreement heads off the worst-case scenario for the Greater Green Bay Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“My biggest concern was the loss of a preseason game, or especially a regular-season game,” said Brad Toll, president and CEO of the bureau. “There isn’t any way for us to be able to make up the loss of a game from a tax revenue and revenue-generating point of view.”

Toll said the area had a number of other events that helped bolster the local economy this summer, including the Kenny Chesney concert at Lambeau Field, visitors at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help and the 2011 U.S. Youth Soccer Midwest Regional Championships, which was spread between Green Bay and the Fox Cities.

Tourism numbers have been on an upswing so far this year, he said.

“We were kind of holding our breath, because this could have let the wind out of the sail again if we would have started to lose part of the season,” Toll said.
